Doug Pederson Announces More Staff Changes For Jaguars

Two offensive coaches will not return in 2023.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will be replacing 10 members of their coaching staff, with eight defensive assistants and two offensive assistants departing the team.

“Since our season’s end, I have made the difficult decision to relieve several members of the coaching staff – on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball – of their duties," Pederson said in a statement. "I want to thank each of these coaches for their tireless efforts these last two seasons. Ultimately, I felt change was necessary to allow our football team to reach the goals for which we are capable.”

The following coaches have been terminated by the Jaguars:

  • Defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell
  • Defensive Line Coach Brentson Buckner
  • Defensive Quality Control Coach Sean Cullina
  • Inside Linebackers Coach Tony Gilbert
  • Safeties Coach Cody Grimm
  • Defensive Quality Control Coach Tee Mitchell
  • Senior Defensive Assistant Bob Sutton
  • Passing Game Coordinator/Cornerbacks Coach Deshea Townsend
  • Running Backs Coach Bernie Parmalee

Assistant offensive line coach Todd Washington's contract expired and he will not return, as well.

This could presumably mean that the rest of the coaching staff is safe, including offensive coordinator Press Taylor.

The Jaguars finished the 2023 season with their second consecutive 9-8 record, though this year's record was the result of a late-season collapse that saw the Jaguars go 1-5 down the stretch, including a 28-20 loss to the Tennessee Titans in Week 18.

“I think you get down the road during the season and as coaches, sometimes we say, ‘You know what, we’ll get that meeting. We’ll fix that in the meeting.’ You do, you fix it, but I want to fix it on the field. If Trevor [Lawrence] makes a poor decision on the field with a throw, let’s (do) positive reinforcement," Pederson said on Monday.

"Let’s let him get it again, even though he knows exactly where to go with the ball, let’s let him make that decision differently. I think sometimes we get caught up too much. Let’s fix it in the meeting, let’s fix it tomorrow, when in reality, we need to fix it right then. That’s just ownership by everybody involved and making sure that we stay on top of those situations. We don’t let them happen.”
