Cornerback Shaq Griffin is staying in the AFC South, agreeing to a one-year deal worth up to $4.5 million with the Houston Texans according to Jordan Schultz of The Score.

Griffin’s tenure in Jacksonville was considered a large what if, with injuries and lack of production vastly outweighing the three-year, $40 million contract he signed prior to the 2021 season.

2022 was an especially tough season for the 27-year-old, being limited to five games before a back injury forced him onto season ending injury reserve.

In two seasons with the Jags, Griffin appeared in 19 contests, amassing 78 total tackles (three for loss), 11 passes defended, and a forced fumble.

For his career, Griffin has 318 total tackles, 59 passes defended, and six interceptions, proving with past production that he is capable of being an impact defender in the right situation.

Despite the tough stretch in Jacksonville, the former Seattle Seahawks third-round selection made a Pro Bowl as recently as 2019 and at 27 years old, he ideally still has some of his best football still in front of him.

At least that’s what the Houston Texans are banking on. With the recent hire of defensive guru DeMeco Ryans as their newest head coach, who is known for getting the best out of his players, Griffin finds himself in the ideal situation for a career rebound and a chance to square off against the Jaguars.

With Griffin released earlier this offseason, the Jaguars are prepared to enter the 2023 season with Tyson Campbell, Darious Williams and Tre Herndon as their top three cornerbacks.
