Jaguars’ OC Press Taylor: Trevor Lawrence’s Maturity Level Is ‘Off the Charts’

The third-year quarterback is just 23 but already has nearly 40 NFL starts under his belt.

While Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence is still set to be one of the youngest starting quarterbacks in the NFL when Week 1 kicks off, the youthfulness has come off the former No. 1 pick and has now been replaced by battle-tested experience.

After two seasons under center, Lawrence has started 36 games (which includes two playoff games) and attempted 1,272 passes. While just 23, the Jaguars' franchise quarterback has been able to use his lessons and battle scars from the past two seasons to mature into the quarter

"He was very receptive and that's the one thing about Trevor, his maturity level is off the charts. So you're able to sit down and say, here's what we see, here's what we need to improve on. He generally has the same notes for the most part," Jaguars offensive coordinator Press Taylor said about Lawrence on Monday.

"Or we'll ask what are your thoughts? And he kind of says the same things we're tracking. So that's very encouraging for us as a coaching staff to kind of already see the same things, want to improve on the same things, whether that's fundamentals with him or schematics In terms of our whole offense."

In 17 starts in 2022, Lawrence completed 387 of 584 passes for 4,113 yards and 25 TDs. His 387 completions were the most in a single season in franchise history and his five rushing TDs were tied with Garrard for the most in single-season franchise history.

Lawrence joined Bengals QB Joe Burrow and Bills QB Josh Allen as the only players in the NFL with 25-plus passing TDs and at least five rushing TDs. Against the Titans in Week 14, Lawrence set a career-high with 368 yards passing and was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance.

The second-year quarterback totaled four 300-yard passing games and orchestrated three comebacks of 17-plus points, including a comeback from behind 27-0 in the postseason against the Chargers.

Now, Lawrence is poised to take an even bigger leap as a third-year veteran. After entering his third offense in three years last offseason, Lawrence is now in the same offensive system for consecutive seasons for the first time in his NFL career.

"I think with all our guys, the biggest thing is they're not hearing something for the first time. So now we install something or talk about a concept or get into detail, the questions they're asking are much further beyond what they were asking last year. It kind of gets into specifics of the defense does this, now we do this," Taylor said.

"And you have a little bit deeper level of conversation from that, especially with the quarterbacks, which is always the goal to be on the same page with those guys. So it's been fun to see all our guys take the next step in the system."
