Jaguars TE Evan Engram Gets 3-Year Extension Ahead Of Franchise Tag Deadline
Evan Engram got his deal.
A year after betting on himself with a one-year deal, the former first-round pick has signed a three-year contract extension with the Jaguars. The agreement comes nearly 30 hours before the deadline for franchise-tagged players to sign long-term deals, helping Engram avoid the tag.
Engram had a career year in 2022 as he caught 73 passes for 766 yards and four touchdowns, along with 12 catches for 124 yards and a touchdown in two playoff games.
Engram not only finished fourth among all tight ends in receiving yards, but he set a franchise record for receptions and receiving yards by a tight end in a single season.
The Jaguars wanted to sign Engram to a long-term deal when they first signed him in the 2022 offseason, but the former New York Giant opted for a one-year deal with hopes of cashing in a year later.
Jacksonville always intended to extend Engram, with the details of the deal being the one aspect that forced it to come all the way down to the deadline. This is the second year in a row the Jaguars have signed a veteran to a long-term deal in the same offseason that they also placed the franchise tag on said player, with the Jaguars having a similar outcome with left tackle Cam Robinson last season.
“There’s ups and downs as you go through the process and you’re just trying to come to a common goal to get him signed. I think we’re trending that direction, but we’re not there yet," Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke said earlier this offseason.
"We’re going to continue to work to get him signed to a long-term extension and hopefully we can get that done.”
On Sunday, the Jaguars got it done. Now, they have one of Trevor Lawrence's top weapons under contract for the next three years.
