Tyson Campbell, Trevor Lawrence Named to PFF's Top-101 Players of 2022

Two of the Jaguars' top young players have earned some worthy recognition for their play in 2022.

Two of the Jacksonville Jaguars' best players have earned some worthy praise for their play last season.

In Pro Football Focus' series of their top 101 players of the 2022 season, Jaguars cornerback Tyson Campbell (No. 90) and Trevor Lawrence (No. 94) made their debuts.

Lawrence finished ahead of Kirk Cousins and behind Lamar Jackson in a second-year campaign that saw him improve in every statistical category.

In 17 starts in 2022, Lawrence completed 387 of 584 passes for 4,113 yards and 25 TDs. His 387 completions were the most in a single season in franchise history and his five rushing TDs were tied with David Garrard for the most in single-season franchise history.

Lawrence joined Bengals QB Joe Burrow and Bills QB Josh Allen as the only players in the NFL with 25-plus passing TDs and at least five rushing TDs.

"After the disaster that was the Urban Meyer tenure in Jacksonville, Lawrence first turned the corner in Year 2 and then went on to play as well as any quarterback in the league by the end of it. From Week 9 onward, only Joe Burrow and Patrick Mahomes earned better PFF grades," PFF wrote.

"I think you look at what we did this season, and I can speak kind of for the whole offense, we didn’t really hit our stride until later in the season, and there’s a lot more out there for us, and even this past week we left a lot on the table," Lawrence said at the end of the season.

"There’s a lot of things that we can do better, that I can do better. I know that I still for sure have my best football in front of me. That’s the exciting thing, is all the things that we accomplished and have left on the table. You look at whether it’s the one-score losses that we had earlier in the season of some of the offensive performances that weren’t up to our standards throughout the year, clean up some of those and play better week in and week out, play more consistently, and there’s a lot more for us.”

As for Campbell, the No. 33 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft improved after a promising rookie season and put himself on the map in 2022. Campbell started all 19 games (17 regular season) for the Jaguars, recording there interceptions, 15 pass deflections, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery for a touchdown, and two tackles for loss.

"Campbell took a big leap forward in Year 2 in the NFL. The former second-round draft pick finished with nine pass breakups and wasn’t beaten for a pass longer than 25 yards all season," PFF said. "He surrendered just 9.7 yards per catch despite lining up almost exclusively on the outside."

"He meets early in the morning, gets a little extra with his coach. Deshea (Townsend) is doing a great job of feeding him information and he’s taking it," Jaguars defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell said during the season.

"On the field, you see the confidence, and you see the leadership starting to show up. He’ll speak to the DBs, and get guys in the right place, so it’s good to see his growth.”
