Don't Expect to See Trevor Siemian Face Chiefs on Sunday Night Football

Former NFL starter busy learning playbook after landing on Jets' Practice Squad

Veteran quarterback Trevor Siemian has officially joined the New York Jets, but Zach Wilson will remain the starter for the foreseeable future.

In his first public comments since the Jets signed Siemian to the Practice Squad, third-year head coach Robert Saleh said that the new addition will be inactive for the team's Week 4 home game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

"Obviously, got a lot a games under his belt. He's a quick learner, quick study from my understanding," said Saleh about the 2015 seventh-round draft pick. "So, just giving him the ability to come onto the Practice Squad and helps us out was the best decision for us."

The 31-year-old Siemian has made 35 career regular season appearances, including 30 starts. He spent the 2023 preseason competing for a backup job with the Cincinnati Bengals and was released on August 29.

Siemian, a 3,400-yard passer in 2016, arrived in Florham Park on Tuesday and signed his PS deal after passing a physical. The Northwestern product, who has seen regular season game action with four different NFL franchises, will begin studying the Jets' playbook but there is no known timetable for his activation.

"We'll see. Every case is different, so it's case by case," said Saleh.

After a 13-11 start to his career with the Denver Broncos, Siemian owns an 0-6 record in his six most-recent starts. Coincidentally, his lone start during the 2022 season came in a 31-10 loss to the Jets. The 6-foot-3 signal caller went 14-of-25 passing for 179 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Meanwhile, Gang Green will make its first Sunday Night Football appearance since 2011 when the reigning Super Bowl champion visit MetLife Stadium on October 1. The game will kick off at 8:20 pm ET on NBC.

Wilson, who has accounted for a league-low 57.0 quarterback rating over the season's first three weeks, is slated to start against the Chiefs with Tim Boyle backing him up. Once drafted to be the Jets' franchise quarterback, Wilson ranks last amongst qualified passers in completion percentage (52.4) through three games.

"We all acknowledge he has to play better," said Saleh on Wednesday.
