Former Jets' Rookie Safety Could Suit Up for Chiefs in AFC Divisional Round

In this story:
Trey Dean is joining the list of rookies on NFL Playoff teams.
After spending the entire 2023 regular season on the New York Jets' Practice Squad, the undrafted rookie safety has signed a P-squad deal with the defending Super Bowl champions. Dean officially joined the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday ahead of the team's AFC Divisional Round road game against the Buffalo Bills on January 21.
Dean is eligible for designation as a gameday elevation and could potentially suit up for Sunday's divisional round affair in Orchard Park. The 23-year-old safety did not make a regular season appearance for the Jets after playing in all four of the team's preseason games. Dean made multiple stops in every preseason contest, finishing fifth on the NFL leaderboard with 22 summertime tackles.
Despite the productive preseason, Dean did not survive cutdown day but immediately landed on the Practice Squad.
Dean was a five-year contributor for the Florida Gators, playing in 62 games. The battle-tested prospect was named the Defensive MVP at last year's East West Shrine Bowl but went undrafted mainly due to a slow 40-yard dash time.
The Jets ended the 2023 season with four safeties on their 53-man roster. Starters Jordan Whitehead and Tony Adams led a unit that also featured Ashtyn Davis and sixth-round rookie Jarrick Bernard-Converse.
There will be a former Jet on the other side of Sunday's AFC clash between Kansas City and Buffalo. Running back Ty Johnson, who was released by New York in April, has worked his way into the Bills' rotation. Johnson carried eight times for 26 yards in Buffalo's AFC Wildcard win over Pittsburgh on January 15.
