New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold will miss Monday's matchup with the Cleveland Browns and possibly beyond due to a case of mono.

Jets coach Adam Gase announced the news during his Thursday press conference.

Gase said Darnold has already lost about five pounds and emphasized the Jets' Week 4 bye, which could indicate his starting quarterback might not be available until the Week 5 matchup at the Philadelphia Eagles

"I don't want to put predictions on anything," Gase said. "I'm just glad we've got the bye week when we do."

Backup quarterback Trevor Siemian will start in place of Darnold. Luke Falk will now serve as the second string quarterback.

The news was delivered to Darnold late Wednesday night by Gase as well as a team trainer and quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains. Darnold was previously categorized on Wednesday by the Jets as having strep throat, and not expected to miss time.
