QB Of Future: Could Jets Target Senior Bowl MVP?

Most draft analysts understand that while the New York Jets need offensive line help, addressing the backup quarterback position is important. Could the Senior Bowl MVP provide some help in the later rounds?

When it comes to offseason needs, backup quarterback is something the New York Jets can't ignore.

No one denies that signing a competent veteran backup will be at the top of general manager Joe Douglas' "to-do list" but having a rookie project wouldn't be such a bad idea either.

Could Spencer Rattler, the Senior Bowl MVP this past weekend, be the kind of prospect New York is interested in?

Oklahoma QB Spencer Rattler runs after throwing touchdown

The former South Carolina and Oklahoma product went four for four passing for 65 yards and a touchdown throw to Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint in the game's opening drive. His work in the game and practice made him the game's MVP.

Pro Football Network and other major draft sites believe Rattler is an early Day-Three quarterback with the potential to climb into the second or third rounds in April.

It's certainly a far cry from the roller-coaster college career the former top overall high school athlete went through in college.

After replacing Jalen Hurts in Oklahoma, Rattler ended up losing the job to Caleb Williams midway through his sophomore season. After transferring to South Carolina, he threw for 6,200 yards and 37 touchdown passes in two seasons.

At 23 years old, Rattler is not one of the younger signal-callers entering his rookie season in the NFL. There will be plenty of teams that fall in love with his big arm and athleticism though, as most teams look for prospects in the latter rounds.

The Jets are certainly one of those teams.

After struggling to get the most out of former second-overall pick Zach Wilson, finding a young quarterback to develop behind four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers. Learning behind a signal-caller as experienced as the future Hall of Famer would be instrumental for any particular young quarterback.

New York has five draft picks currently in the 2024 draft with three more conditional picks expected to be rewarded after losing free agents last season.

With a potential total of eight, it's not outlandish to think that Gang Green should be looking to address their quarterback of the future question at some point in the later rounds of the NFL Draft.
