Darrelle Revis on Kanye West 2020 presidential bid: He has my vote

Former New York Jets star Darrelle Revis said on Twitter he will vote for Kanye West for President.

Kanye West may have found his Secretary of Defense.

On Saturday, entertainment and lifestyle mogul Kanye West announced that he will be entering the 2020 election for President of the United States. West who never before has held public office, had originally been eyeing a run at 2024 but since moved up his timeline. Within hours of his announcement, which he made via his social media channels, West received an endorsement from one of the NFL’s biggest stars of the past decade.

Darrelle Revis, arguably the greatest cornerback of all-time, said he is in favor of ‘Making America Yeezy Again.’ OK, Revis didn’t exactly say that but he did say that West has his vote this fall.

It is unclear if Revis was joking about his vote or if he is seriously considering throwing his support behind a West candidacy.

The announcement by Revis caught a fair amount of flack with concerns by many of his followers on Twitter who worried that West’s entry into the election will end up causing Vice President Joe Biden to lose votes. In Biden, there is hope from many Democrats and some independents of unseating President Donald Trump this fall.

In recent polls, Biden holds a rather solid lead but West’s entry into the race could well split that vote. A significant enough split could tilt the balance of the vote not just in the general election but also in the electoral college.

West is one of the most successful entertainers and business leaders in the world. He has infamously met with President Trump at the White House and had thrown support behind the current administration on several key issues in the past.

It is unclear what in particular has sparked Revis’ interest in West, who had yet to unveil a platform or key issues. West, a revolutionary figure in music and culture, recently was declared a billionaire.

Revis has been vocal in recent weeks about social justice issues, recently tweeting in support of Breonna Taylor, who was wrongfully killed by Louisville police earlier this year.

Politics and sports figures mixing and matching is nothing new but the crossover has seemed to gain momentum in recent years. In 2016, former Jets center Nick Mangold campaigned on behalf of the current President. Former Jets owner Woody Johnson is currently the ambassador to the United Kingdom, appointed by President Trump.

And Burgess Owens, a former NFL safety who spent seven years with the Jets, is running for Congress as a Republican in Utah.
