Quarterback Trevor Siemian Climbs Jets Depth Chart
The New York Jets' starting quarterback change also affected Trevor Siemian's status with the club.
After Aaron Rodgers's Week 1 Achilles injury, the Jets inked the 31-year-old Siemian to a Practice Squad contract. He has not yet been called up to the active roster, but that will change prior to the November 24 home game against the Miami Dolphins.
With starter Zach Wilson losing his job for the second year in a row, Siemian will step up into the No. 2 role behind Tim Boyle while Wilson drops down to third string.
"All three will be up on game day, Trevor will be the immediate backup," said Jets' head coach Robert Saleh on Monday afternoon.
The Jets are averaging 15.0 points per game, the third-lowest average in the NFL. Wilson managed only two touchdown passes in his last six games with both going to running back Breece Hall.
"It is not a one person thing, but just to see if we could get something going," said Saleh about the decision to demote Wilson.
Siemian, who made one start for the 2019 Jets, spent the 2022 season with the Chicago Bears. He joined the Cincinnati Bengals in the offseason and went on to compete for the chance to back up Joe Burrow.
After finishing last in the Bengals' training camp QB competition, Siemian received his release on August 29. He went 36-of-65 passing for 316 yards and two interceptions over three preseason games.
Siemian owns a 13-17 all-time record as an NFL starter. In 14 starts for the 2016 Denver Broncos, the former seventh-round draft pick threw for 3,401 yards, 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He earned four starts for the 2021 New Orleans Saints, accounting for an 11:3 touchdown-to-interception ratio.
For his career, Siemian has accumulated 7,207 pass yards while posting a 58.9 completion percentage to go with 42 touchdown passes and 28 interceptions.
Although Siemian is the more accomplished pro, Boyle has more experience operating in offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett's scheme.
"Just give him [Boyle] an opportunity. He is a different style of quarterback, so really it was just to give him an opportunity to see if we can do something with the offense," said Saleh.
