RODGERS WATCH: Jets' Fans Wait for Ongoing Trade Negotiations to Reach Conclusion

Can Green Bay command a first-round pick for the 39-year old quarterback? Is there a deadline?

The Aaron Rodgers Watch has reached a bit of a lull.

Since the superstar quarterback, who has spent the last 18 seasons in Green Bay, stated his intention to play for the New York Jets while appearing on the March 15 edition of the Pat McAfee Show, the Packers and the Jets are presumably working on a trade compensation agreement for Rodgers.

There has been speculation that the Packers are in no rush to immediately complete a deal as they already have their quarterback in place for the 2023 season with Jordan Love set to take the reins.

Appearing on none other than the Pat McAfee Show, NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport suggested that there is no imminent deadline for the Packers and Jets to hammer out a trade.

“There is a real possibility this rolls right up until the Draft because that’s the only deadline,” said Rapoport. “It’s about 2023 draft picks and when you actually have to use them is the deadline.”

The 2023 NFL Draft kicks off on April 27 in Kansas City.

The Jets currently possess one selection in each of the Draft’s first six rounds, including the No. 13 pick overall.

So, how many of those picks will they have to surrender in order to pry Rodgers from Green Bay? Will the Packers be able to demand Gang Green’s first-round selection?

Sports Illustrated’s Andrew Brandt noted that the trade discussions most certainly include the question about the $60 million guaranteed to Rodgers if he plays in 2023.

“Issue of how much, if any, of Rodgers $60 million will be paid by the Packers. The more they pay, the better draft picks they get back,” wrote Brandt on March 6.

As for the possibility of the Jets parting ways with the No. 13 overall selection, SI’s Albert Breer addressed the compensation issue in his St. Patrick’s Day mailbag.

“I’d just say that if the 13th pick was on the table, with maybe a little sweetener, I think the deal would probably be done already,” wrote Breer, who subsequently offered his idea of a fair deal.

“To me, a fair price would be the Jets’ second-round pick (No. 43) and a conditional pick this year or next or both,” proposed Breer.

Considering Rodgers is a four-time NFL MVP, the Packers may believe they can demand a first-rounder for the 39-year old quarterback although this year’s trade market doesn’t appear to be trending in their favor.

With that said, the Jets have seemingly committed to Rodgers being their quarterback in 2023 despite him still being under contract with Green Bay.

As pundits argue over which team has the “leverage” in the trade negotiations, hopeful Jets’ fans are left to sit and wait for their new quarterback to arrive.
