Saleh Declares Starting Quarterback for Jets' Next Game vs. Falcons

Head coach is 'giving Timmy another shot to roll next week'

The Tim Boyle experiment will live for another week.

New York Jets' head coach Robert Saleh said that the 29-year-old quarterback will make a second straight start when the Atlanta Falcons visit MetLife Stadium on December 3.

"We’re giving Timmy another shot to roll next week," said Saleh on Monday.

Trying to spark an historically underperforming offense, the Jets sent former No. 2 overall draft pick Zach Wilson to the bench and put Boyle at the controls following the Week 11 road loss to Buffalo.

Making his first start as a Jet, Boyle led a punchless attack against the Miami Dolphins in the first-ever NFL Black Friday Game on November 24. The Green & White managed only 40 net yards and two first downs through the first three quarters of the 34-13 loss.

"There’s things that he could have done better, there’s things that he had no control over and I know he battled out there," said Saleh.

After a stat-padding fourth quarter, with the game out of reach, Boyle finished 27-of-38 passing for 179 yards and one touchdown. He was intercepted twice and sacked seven times. His one-yard scoring strike to Garrett Wilson pulled Gang Green with 27-13 with 4:37 remaining in the final period.

"We were able to execute a lot of the different things that we wanted to execute, it just didn’t come to full fruition," said Saleh.

Boyle averaged 4.7 yards per pass attempt while posting a 67.8 quarterback rating in what was his fourth career start. Boyle, who started three games for the 2021 Detroit Lions, dropped to 0-4 as an NFL starting quarterback. For his career, he's averaging 5.0 yards per pass attempt while accounting for four touchdown passes to 11 interceptions.

Through 10 appearances this season, Wilson has accounted for a 6:7 touchdown-to-interception ratio and a 73.8 passer rating.

Veteran Trevor Siemian is Boyle's immediate backup with Wilson having been demoted to third string. Siemian has 13 career wins as a starter to go along with a 42 touchdown passes and 28 interceptions.

The Jets (4-7) will attempt to snap their four-game losing streak when they host the Falcons in Week 13. The team has seven passing touchdowns through 11 games.
