Lions' Brock Wright Signs Offer Sheet With 49ers

Lions have five days to match offer from San Francisco

The Detroit Lions face a key decision regarding one of the important parts of their run game.

Tight end Brock Wright, a restricted free agent, has signed a lucrative offer sheet with the San Francisco 49ers. The Lions will now have five days to decide whether or not to match the offer provided by the 49ers.

Detroit initially offered Wright a one-year, $2.985 million restricted free agent tender.

According to the Free Press, the 25-year-old signed a three-year, $12 million contract agreement to join the defending NFC Champions. If the Lions do not match San Francisco's offer, there will be no compensation.

In a secondary pass-catching role over the last three seasons, Wright has compiled 43 receptions for 424 yards and seven touchdowns. He's served as a key part of Detroit's run-attack in personnel sets that deploy two tight ends.

Wright served as depth last season after the emergence of rookie Sam LaPorta, who enjoyed a banner year in his first NFL campaign. LaPorta wound up setting the NFL record for receptions by a rookie tight end.

In Wright's case, he finished the 2023 season with 13 receptions for 91 yards and one touchdown. His score came at a crucial time, however, as he hauled in a fourth quarter touchdown from quarterback Jared Goff to give the Lions a late lead.

Wright's most memorable moment to this point in his three-year career came against the New York Jets late in the 2022 campaign. With the Lions facing a critical fourth down late in the game, he hauled in a short pass from Goff and raced 51 yards for the game-winning score.

The Notre Dame product went undrafted in 2021 before signing with the Lions and making the team out of training camp.

Currently, the Lions have Shane Zylstra and James Mitchell also on roster at the position besides LaPorta. Zylstra missed all of last season with a knee injury suffered in training camp, while Mitchell was placed on injured reserve in the postseason after undergoing surgery on his hand.
