Early Look at Lions' 2024 Salary Cap Puts Brad Holmes in Great Position

Lions have plenty of salary-cap space to upgrade roster.

The Detroit Lions are in an advantageous position to build upon the success of the 2023 NFL season.

General manager Brad Holmes and the front office have key decisions to make on 20 unrestricted free agents, including two starting offensive linemen.

While Graham Glasgow is more likely to return than Jonah Jackson, Holmes has the flexibility to keep the team largely in tact, if that is the direction the organization wants to head towards (as the salary cap is being managed exceptionally).

Currently, Detroit has approximately $61 million in cap space available heading into the offseason, according to Spotrac

The salary cap for the 2024 season has yet to be officially released, but last year, the cap was established at $224.8 million. It was nearly a $20 million increase over the season prior.

Many across the league expect the number to rise again to well over $240 million.

An early offseason storyline will involve what the organization decides to do with Jared Goff and his contract extension.

It has been reported that both sides will work to craft an extension this offseason.

The ability to spread out signing bonuses and getting creative can actually lower Goff's cap number for 2024.

Also, moving on from certain players and renegotiating contracts can also free up additional monies.

Holmes is expected to address how aggressive the team will be in free agency when he next speaks with the media, to officially wrap up the 2023 season.
