Lions Making Sure Jared Goff 'Aware Exactly' of Draft Plans

In this story:
The Detroit Lions have the flexibility to draft a quarterback in either the early or later rounds of the 2023 NFL Draft.
According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, "Both the Lions and Raiders, sitting at Nos. 6 and 7, could take a quarterback. And the Raiders did make a late run at moving up to the first pick, just before Chicago moved it to Carolina. And really, this turn, with these two teams, could be where the QBs start to tumble."
Veteran signal-caller Jared Goff has made it easier, with his stellar play, for Detroit's front office to hold off on selecting a quarterback in this year's draft.
The prospects coming out of college at the quarterback position have many question marks, which could force teams to shy away from making selections early.
For Lions general manager Brad Holmes, maintaining a good line of communication and transparency has kept his relationships with players reasonable since he arrived in Motown.
Holmes explained to reporters at the league meetings, "I think the whole thing about that is, is transparency and communication. And, I communicated with Jared (Goff) at the end of the season about, just like I told you guys at the combine about, we got Jared, but we didn't have anything else behind him. So, just letting them know that, look, we got to get some more behind you, you know? I think we are in a unique position with all the picks that we have to add maybe a pretty talented guy, if we go that direction."
On Tuesday, the team is set to visit with Tennessee Volunteers quarterback Hendon Hooker for a pre-draft visit.
While Anthony Richardson and Will Levis are intriguing, both have not done enough to erase the many questions regarding their NFL readiness.
Dan Campbell gave Goff another vote of confidence, while dismissing the notion that the team would pursue Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.
"Trying to defend that guy has been something else. We played them two years ago. But, man, we've got a quarterback," Campbell said. "So, I'm like, 'We've got a quarterback, and thank God we got one.' So, we're good."
The team may have the backup quarterback position finally resolved, should veteran Teddy Bridgewater decide to accept a "strong" contract offer. The 30-year-old signal-caller is reportedly going to take some time, and weigh his options before signing his next deal with an NFL team.
If Detroit ends up drafting a quarterback, Goff will be fully in the loop, as to avoid any misunderstandings regarding the team's intentions.
"But, again, it doesn't have to be the first round, and have to be the second round. It can be at any point," said Holmes. "But, I just feel like we're in a good place right now. We just kind of keep the communication open. ...If we were to go that direction and add one, that he's aware exactly what we're doing."
