All Lions: Holmes Shouldn't 'Go Overboard' on Goff's Extension

Former NFL GM weighs in on Goff's contract situation.

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff is due for an extension, and the elements of that new contract are an intriguing talking point this offseason.

With the Super Bowl in the rearview mirror, teams are now beginning to formulate plans for maintaining their talent ahead of the 2024 season.

On a recent episode of ESPN's "This Is Football," former NFL general manager Thomas Dimitroff spoke with host Kevin Clark on a number of intriguing personnel matters across the league.

Among them was Goff's extension. While Dimitroff was in favor of the Lions extending the passer, he believes that the organization should not overpay to retain him.

“Look, I think Jared Goff has done really good things for that organization, of course, for Brad Holmes. Kudos to him, there were a lot of darts thrown early on," Dimitroff said. "I look at him, and I’m thinking, you have to be market value with him of course. I don’t think you can be held to, you have to be smart about how far you go there. You can look that agent and Jared in the eye, and say, ‘Look, we want you here and here’s our number.’ I don’t think you go overboard on it, far from that. Those things can end quite quickly, we know that."

"It’s not like he’s in the prime of his career," Dimitroff continued. "I’m really impressed with what he’s done. I have to raise my hand, I wasn’t expecting that. But, when you start talking about that and then you start contrasting that with where you are with Jordan Love, I mean, is Jordan Love worthy of $55 million a year? Is that where we’re going with him? Wow. I like what he’s doing, but what if he comes back next year and there was an anomaly or an anomalous element and he’s not where we thought he was?”
