Why David Blough Becoming Commanders OC Is Positive For Lions

One of the candidates that was in the running to potentially become the next Detroit Lions offensive coordinator is no longer available.
According to multiple reports, former Detroit Lions backup quarterback David Blough is set to be named the next offensive coordinator of the Washington Commanders.
Former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel was quite close to Commanders head coach Dan Quinn.
The fast-rising offensive mind being elevated quite quickly still gives Detroit the chance to land McDaniel, who is also in the running to become the Tennessee Titans next head coach.
According to Sports Illustrated, "Born in Texas, Blough played collegiately for Purdue. He ranks ninth on the Big Ten’s all-time passing leaderboard with 9,734 yards through the air from 2015 to ‘18. Going undrafted in 2019, Blough signed with the Browns initially before catching on with the Lions towards the end of that season. He went on to start five games for Detroit amid a rash of quarterback injuries, throwing four touchdowns against six interceptions. He played two more games for the Lions in two years, and started two games for the Cardinals in 2022."
Blough ended up finishing his NFL career on Detroit's practice squad back in 2023. After retirement, he quickly climbed up the coaching ranks.
“I love the kid, if I’m being totally honest with you,” Dan Campbell told reporters back in 2021. “He’s just a little football player. And when I say that, I mean that in the highest regard. Look, he’s smart. He’s extremely smart. He knows where to go with the football, I love his timing.
"He knows how to command the huddle, he communicates well and on top of that, he’s a hell of a dude, by the way. He just is. So, he has not disappointed. He’s doing a good job. He’s out there competing with the rest of those guys.”
It was reported on Friday evening that both Jake Peetz of the Seahawks and Tee Higgins of the Ravens will also earn interviews.
The Commanders and former offensive coordinator Kilff Kingsbury made the decision to part ways, following the conclusion of the 2025 season.
The talented coordinator and former Arizona Cardinals head coach had a successful first season back in 2024.
Kingsbury assisted the NFC East squad to reach a 12–5 record and an appearance in the NFC Championship game after defeating Detroit.
