Lions Penei Sewell Will Toss First Pitch at Tigers Opening Day

Detroit Tigers return to Comerica Park April 5 for home opener.

The Detroit Tigers are welcoming a special guest for opening day at Comerica Park to toss the first pitch.

Detroit Lions Penei Sewell, who has quickly emerged as one of the NFL's top right tackles, will take the mound in front of passionate fans to throw out the first pitch.

Members of the Lions have regularly supported the Tigers, who are off to a 4-0 start to their 2024 season.

On several ocassions, members of the Lions have attended games at Comerica Park and have tossed out first pitches.

This year, it is expected that Detroit's home opener will have a capacity crowd with standing-room-only tickets being nearly sold out.

"We're excited to welcome our fans back to Comerica Park, where the experience will look, sound and feel much different this season," said Ryan Gustafson, President and CEO, Ilitch Sports and Entertainment. "We can't wait to unveil our brand-new scoreboard and introduce our upgraded sound system, and for Tigers fans to enjoy all the new and traditional offerings at the ballpark all season long."

Grace West, a finalist on 'The Voice' last season, will perform the Opening Day National Anthem.

First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. on Friday, April 5. Gates are scheduled to open 10:30 a.m.

New special events

The Tigers will honor former manager Jim Leyland's induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on Saturday, August 3 against the Royals.

Against the Boston Red Sox on Saturday, August 31, the 40th anniversary of the 1984 World Series championship team will take place.

The first 15,000 fans to enter Comerica Park will again receive giveaways each Saturday home game.
