Antonio Brown Calls for Cam Newton to Join His Arena Football Team

Could the former NFL MVP take his talent to...Albany?

Former Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has been patiently waiting to make his return to football after the right opportunity didn't present itself in 2022. He worked out in front of pro scouts, head coaches, and GMs at Auburn's Pro Day but still has yet to land a deal with an NFL team.

So in the meantime, would Cam be up for a brief stint in the Arena Football League? The offer is on the table. Antonio Brown, owner of the Albany Empire, offered Newton $150k to play in the team's next home game against the Jacksonville Sharks on June 17th.

Although it would make for some fun entertainment, I don't see Cam doing this. In no way does it benefit him. It's not going to all of a sudden intrigue some NFL team to sign him after playing in a completely different style of football game. By playing, it might actually lead some teams to believe that Newton is content with playing anywhere he can and that he believes a return to the NFL is off the table.

Earlier this offseason, Newton actually listed a number of quarterbacks that he wouldn't mind backing up in the NFL.

"I know a lot of people have a lot of things to say in regards to my future in the NFL. And I wanted to set the record straight by saying this is how I feel. There ain't 32 guys that's better than me. But I also know that I could also be a backup. And I'm willing to be a backup. Players that I would back up: Number one Deshaun Watson. He was on my 7-on-7 all-star team. I've grown to admire the person, the athlete that he is. Going through a lot of turmoil but I believe that's behind him. My number two person would be wherever Lamar Jackson decides to go. Number three would be Justin Fields, another C1N product. Number four would be Tua Tagovailoa. Number five would be Malik Willis, another C1N all-star representative.

"And I would say there's three rookie quarterbacks that I would love or enjoy to groom. Any of these rookie quarterbacks: C.J. Stroud, Bryce Young, and Anthony Richardson. Any one of those guys, I would be happy to back those guys up.

"Number seven Jalen Hurts. Number eight would be Aaron Rodgers. Number nine would be Josh Allen. And number ten would be Sam Howell, another C1N alumni. Now some of those guys may already have penciled in backups that their franchise is probably okay with and that's fine. I'm just voicing my opinion and I'm just getting the narrative out."
