PFF Lists Carolina as Potential Landing Spot for Austin Ekeler

In this story:
Carolina is desperate for some juice on the offensive side of the ball, and PFF believes that it could come in the form of a veteran running back.
Austin Ekeler, 28, is hitting free agency for the first time since 2020. Fantasy football enthusiasts know Ekeler as a stout runner with elite hands out of the backfield. At his peak, the former Charger was good for 1500+ all-purpose yards and double digit touchdowns. However, his peak has passed and Ekeler is firmly in the twilight of his career.

His 2023 season was a disappointment for fantasy mangers and Chargers fans alike. His 628 rushing yards and 436 receiving yards are his lowest marks in those categories since his injury shortened 2020 season. Justin Herbert's injury-plagued season combined with a disappointing season by the Los Angeles Chargers as a whole aided his downfall from the elite production people expected from him.
How would he fit in Carolina?
The Panthers handed out a massive contract (for running back standards) to Miles Sanders last offseason. Sanders paired with Chuba Hubbard as a one-two punch that hit their stride towards the end of the season. Ekeler may have a hard time finding run behind Carolina's incumbent duo, but his pass-catching ability clears both Sanders and Hubbard.
If Carolina signs Ekeler, he'll enter the fray solely as a change-of-pace back to be an outlet for Bryce Young. Young thrived with Jahmyr Gibbs flanking him at running back in college, and Ekeler could fill the role as Young's Gibbs in Carolina.
