Grading the Panthers' Selection of WR Jonathan Mingo

In this story:
The Carolina Panthers selected Ole Miss wide receiver Jonathan Mingo with the 39th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Here are some initial thoughts and grades on the pick from members of our staff.
Schuyler Callihan: B
A lot of upside here with Mingo but I felt pass rusher was more of a pressing need. Plus, I had Mingo as a third-round grade, so it seems like a bit of a reach to me. But with their next pick not until 93, Carolina probably felt he wouldn't last that long. All that being said, Mingo has all the tools to come in and compete right away for a role in this offense. Very good after the catch and can stretch the field vertically.
Matt Alquiza: A
Mingo will step into Carolina and demand targets right away. Wide receiver was a big long-term need for the team and Mingo fills that hole. He and Bryce Young will have plenty of time to develop together and they will definitely become a problem for the NFC South.
Ian Black: B+
An athletic freak to act as a downfield threat is just what Bryce Young needed. Mingo already has some impressive feats under his belt, as you don’t start all four years on a team that has become a hub for wide receiver talent by accident, or amassing 247 receiving yards in an SEC game by chance. I thought he could’ve been a Day 1 pick, so the value is great here for Carolina.
