Former Panthers Coach Files Arbitration Suit Against the Organization

In this story:

Tuesday, the Carolina Panthers spent the afternoon celebrated in welcoming the sixth head coach in franchise history, Frank Reich.

Wednesday morning, a report from Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports surfaced that former Panthers head coach Matt Rhule has filed an arbitration suit against the organization.

"The suit claims the Panthers are refusing to pay Rhule's severance compensation following his firing from Carolina and subsequent hiring at the University of Nebraska," the report stated.

According to Jones, this suit was filed last week and the compensation that Rhule is seeking is unknown but appears to be roughly $5 million.

Rhule was fired in early October following a 1-4 start to the season, giving him an 11-27 overall record during his tenure in the Queen City. About a month and a half later, he agreed to terms with Nebraska on an eight-year, $74 million contract.

Panthers team owner David Tepper admitted that he made a mistake in his first coaching search, hiring the wrong type of coach.

"I think it's a mistake to have a CEO-type head coach. That's a mistake. Just in general. I think we want to get someone who's really good on offense or really good on defense. And we think that Frank [Reich] is really good on offense.

"It's preferable to have a coach that is really extraordinary on one side of the ball or the other side of the ball. It makes you have to fill those key coordinator positions when you have that."
