Competition at outside linebacker opposite Brian Burns

"There's some great competition there. Yetur [Gross-Matos] is doing a great job, getting better. DJ [Johnson] is coming along. [Amare] Barno is coming along. Kobe [Jones] is doing a good job. As we get into camp and get more padded practices, get through some preseason games I think it will tell more of the story. But I really love the progression of those guys but we need somebody to step up and that's a fact."

If Jeremy Chinn's role has been defined

"I think we got a good idea about where he is. When you go through a whole offseason and you go through this first part of training camp and Jeremy's so good about communicating with the coaches and asking questions, getting up and getting extra time. I feel like we've developed a really good rapport and I think we've got a good feeling on where he's at."

How much he learned from his first year as a defensive coordinator

"I think there's probably more than one thing, but I definitely feel a lot more comfortable in this position at this time than I did at this time last year. Anytime it's the first time you do something it's a learning curve and you make mistakes along the way. Just like we tell our players, you always learn and try not to make the same mistake twice."

Thoughts on Marquan McCall

"Marquan did a great job of coming back in shape and we're expecting him to be a physical presence inside and knock out the run game."

Thoughts on Kamu Grugier-Hill

"It's really what he's done his whole career. He's played a lot of special teams but he's played a lot of defensive football. He's always been a playmaker. He's got a lot of tackles, a lot of interceptions. He's doing what he's always done in his career."
