Should the Panthers Trade Matt Corral?

This is a hard time of year for a lot of players around the NFL. Draft picks are coming in looking to take someone's spot and in some instances, players feel a type of way about their team drafting a player at their position.

That was the case over the weekend with Panthers quarterback Matt Corral, who posted a cryptic story on his Instagram account the very day the team drafted Bryce Young with the first overall pick.

"I didn't see the post," said head coach Frank Reich during an interview with Charlotte Sports Live. "But I don't overreact to stuff like that. This is that time of year. You have the draft, guys are going to get picked. Everybody's trying to jockey and position for themselves when really, at the end of the day, the message to all the players is we earn it on the field."

About a week or so before the draft, general manager Scott Fitterer echoed a similar sentiment.

"He's come in he's ready to compete. He's 220 pounds, looks like a different guy when he showed up. He's in great shape. Great spirits. I haven't talken to him directly about anything that's going on right now. I did talk to his agent. There's nothing promised to anyone. You get what you earn."

So, despite Corral's frustration, should the Panthers keep him? Yes.

You're not going to get anything of value in a trade and as evidenced last season, it's not a bad idea to carry three quarterbacks on your roster when you don't have a star leading your offense. Bryce Young may eventually develop into that type of impact player, but he has to go out and prove it. You don't want to have a situation like you did last preseason where Sam Darnold and Corral go down with injuries, leaving you with Baker Mayfield and PJ Walker. A few weeks later, Mayfield went down and the Panthers scrambled to find a backup quarterback.

Because Corral missed his entire rookie season with a Lisfranc injury, the Panthers' coaching staff has no meaningful pro tape to go off of. This is a clean slate for Corral and who knows? Maybe he eventually becomes Young's backup. I mean, Andy Dalton is 35.
