The Carolina Panthers are officially down to two quarterbacks as Matt Corral was claimed off waivers Thursday afternoon by the New England Patriots.

Panthers GM Scott Fitterer told reporters earlier today that if Corral cleared waivers the plan would be to sign him back on to the practice squad.

"It was a tough decision. I like Matt as a person," Fitterer stated. "Anytime you have a guy that you take and you bring in, you're developing, you see progress it's tough but you're just trying to keep your best 53."

Head coach Frank Reich also made it clear that he would like to have Corral back in the building if he cleared during his press conference on Wednesday.

"We're happy with the progress that Matt made. As we've talked about really the whole offseason, there's a lot of complexities, a lot of moving parts to putting together a roster. Everybody understands that the sole motivation is to do what's best for the team. We're trying to get as many players on the roster and in that locker room on the 53 and on the practice squad as we can that can help us win this year. Those are tough decisions. I wouldn't mind saying I would love to get Matt back. He's done very well. We'd like to see him continue to progress."

Ironically, New England was the team Carolina made a trade with in the 2022 NFL Draft to move up in the third round to select Corral.
