Patriots Assistant Named Offensive Coordinator For Senior Bowl

New England Patriots receivers coach Troy Brown has yet to learn his fate in Foxboro for 2024, but he is headed to the Senior Bowl.

Though the future of the New England Patriots coaching staff — beyond newly-installed head coach Jerod Mayo — may presently be in flux, one Pats assistant will be exhibiting his talents during college football’s most prominent showcase in just over two weeks.

Patriots receivers coach Troy Brown will serve as offensive coordinator for the American team during this year’s Senior Bowl in early February, as confirmed by the event’s media relations team on Wednesday.

This will mark the second straight season in which a Patriots assistant has been chosen for a prominent coaching role in the collegiate All-Star game held annually in Mobile, Ala. Last year, defenisve line coach DeMarcus Covington led the American squad’s defense.

For Brown, it also means consecutive spotlight appearances, having served as head coach of the West team in last season’s East-West Shrine Bowl. Brown led his team to a 12-3 working with future Pats draft picks: receiver DeMario Douglas and guard Atonio Mafi.

Brown has served on the staff of outgoing coach Bill Belichick in New England for the past four seasons. The three-time Super Bowl Champion (as a player) began as a running backs/kick returners coach in 2020 before moving on to his current position as receivers coach in 2021. With Mayo’s hiring as the new Pats head coach, Brown’s status with the team for 2024 and beyond is uncertain. With a strong performance, the 52-year-old can either strengthen his case for retention, or demonstrate his coaching prowess  to a prospective suitors on a national audience.

Still, the opportunity to coach in the Senior Bowl remains beneficial to both Brown and the organization. Thanks in part to Covington’s presence on the 2023 staff, New England was able to effectively scout defensive lineman Keion White, offensive lineman Jake Andrews, kicker Chad Ryland, punter Bryce Baringer and hybrid safety/linebacker Marte Mapu — who Covington coached on the American team — were all selected by the Patriots in last year’s draft.

The 2024 Senior Bowl will commence the week of Jan. 29, with three days of practice followed by the American vs. National game on Saturday, Feb. 3, at Hancock Whitney Stadium.
