Patriots Super Bowl Champion Announces Retirement

Jeremy Hill, primarily known for his time with the Cincinnati Bengals, played one game for the New England Patriots en route to Super Bowl LIII.

Brief New England Patriots running back Jeremy Hill announced his retirement this week, confirming his departure from professional football in an Instagram post.

Hill played but one game with the New England Patriots after a four-year career with the Cincinnati Bengals (2014-17), who brought him in with the 55th pick in the 2014 draft. That brevity was brought about by an injury suffered in his lone game of Foxboro representation, an ACL tear in a win over Hoston during kickoff weekend in 2018.

"Unfortunately, due to the injuries I sustained (on) September 9, 2018, I will no longer be pursuing my career in professional football," Hill wrote below a photo of him celebrating a touchdown scored with the Bengals. "That’s right I’m retiring from the game that we all love so dearly, it’s been one hell of a journey and I wouldn’t have been close to enjoying it without my family specifically my Mother, my coaches, and all the great teammates I was blessed to play with.

"Now the fun part of life starts for me but, in the meantime, I will be doing everything in my power to help the next generation in our game so we all can continue to enjoy our great sport for decades to come."

In New England, Hill picked up 25 yards on four carries in his lone regular season appearance. While he was on injured reserve for nearly the entire run to the Super Bowl, he was nonetheless bestowed a Super Bowl ring after the Patriots took down the Los Angeles Rams in Atlanta. In the preseason, Hill put up 107 yards on 26 carries, including the first touchdown of a comeback victory over Washington.

Hill's NFL career began when he fell to the second round of the draft after two arrests at LSU. In Cincinnati, he earned 2,873 yards with a striped helmet and he ranks seventh on the franchise's rushing touchdowns list with 29. He led the league in that department during the 2015 season with 11 but that campaign, and likely Hill's Bengals career as a whole, is perhaps best remembered for his crucial fumble in the final stages of the AFC Wild Card game against Pittsburgh, one that was part of a late meltdown and an 18-16 Steelers victory.

Prior comeback attempts for Hill included a two-day stint with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2020 and he also tried out for the third attempt at XFL football in November, which followed some time hosting a radio show on ESPN's New Orleans affiliate.
