2019 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Ed Reed has already had one opportunity to coach in the NFL, which was with the Buffalo Bills in 2016. Apparently, he was very close to applying for an assistant coaching gig with another AFC East team after that.

Reed spoke with CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora on Friday and told La Canfora that he considered applying for the Patriots' DBs coaching position.

As of right now, the DBs coaching position is retained by Bill Belichick's son, Steve. This is his first season in that position after being the safeties coach for three seasons.

If Reed had applied for the job, it's hard to imagine that Belichick would have turned him down. Reed is one of the best, if not the best safety to ever play in the NFL. His presence on the coaching staff would have been extremely valuable.
