Former Raiders defensive end Aldon Smith was sentenced to one year in jail on Friday, stemming from a felony DUI charge from December 2021.

Smith pleaded no contest to the charge, and will receive five years of probation, effective immediately.

According to a report from The Mercury News, Smith, 33, crashed into the back of a truck at a stop sign and caused the driver minor injuries. Smith reportedly tried to bribe the driver with $1,000 to not call the police about the accident.

When police arrived on scene, they found two empty bottles of alcohol in Smith’s vehicle. His blood test revealed a blood alcohol content level three times over the legal limit.

This is not Smith’s first complication with the law, as he had a troubled NFL career. He has been arrested multiple times for driving under the influence, as well as arrests for battery and domestic violence, and an arrest for illegal possession of an assault weapon.

Smith was drafted seventh overall in the 2011 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers out of Missouri. He spent three years there before signing with the Raiders when they were in Oakland.

In his time with the Raiders, Smith was suspended for the final seven weeks of the regular season due to a hit-and-run incident in 2015, and sat out the 2016 and 2017 seasons. The Raiders released him in the 2018 offseason. Smith appeared in only nine games for the Raiders, posting 28 total tackles, five tackles for losses, and three and a half sacks.

Smith’s last NFL appearance came in 2020 with the Dallas Cowboys where he posted 48 tackles, five tackles for losses and five sacks. He signed with the Seattle Seahawks in 2021, but never appeared in a game.

The 2023 NFL Draft will go from April 27-29 and be held at Union Station in Kansas City, Mo. The 2023 NFL Year and Free Agency period began at 4 p.m. EDT on March 15.

The Raiders are expected to be significant players in the free-agent market this offseason.
