Brian Hoyer Brings a Veteran Role in Raiders QB Room

Las Vegas Raiders signed Brian Hoyer during 2023 NFL Free Agency

The Las Vegas Raiders continued to sign veteran players during this year's NFL Free Agency. On April 4, 2023, the Raiders signed quarterback Brian Hoyer.

Brian Hoyer has spent 14 seasons as a quarterback in the NFL. Hoyer was an undrafted free agent back in 2009 out of Michigan State and signed with the New England Patriots. Hoyer can bring a key veteran role in the Raiders quarterback room.

Hoyer has spent most of his NFL career with the Patriots. He had three stints with the Patriots (2009-2011, 2018, 2020-22). Hoyer has made a start for seven other NFL teams. These teams include the Arizona Cardinals (2012), the Cleveland Browns (2013-14), the Houston Texans (2015), the Chicago Bears (2016), the San Francisco 49ers (2017), and lastly, the Indianapolis Colts (2019).

In his 14-season career, Hoyer has appeared in 76 games and has made 40 career starts. During his time with the Cleveland Browns, Hoyer played in 14 games, with 13 being the starter. During Hoyer's career, he has completed 902 passes of 10,668 attempts. He also has 53 passing touchdowns in his 14-season career.

Hoyer also strongly connected with Raiders Coach Josh McDaniels. McDaniels spent 18 years with the New England Patriots, with 13 of those years being the Patriots offensive coordinator. Hoyer played in the offensive scheme with McDaniels during his time in New England and should be used to what McDaniels will bring to the Raiders in his second season as the Raiders' coach.

With two quarterbacks in Jimmy Garoppolo and Brian Hoyer for the Raiders, it will be unique to watch how well both veteran quarterbacks will fit in with the similar Josh McDaniels offensive scheme.

Bill Belichick wanted Hoyer to move into the coaching world when his career was completed, and with what he did for Mac Jones, his skills showed.

Unter the tutelage and mentorship of Hoyer, Jones was a Pro Bowl player in his rookie season. Speculation was rampant in New England that Hoyer recommended outside quarterback assistance in 2022 when the New England offensive coaching staff was floundering.

The Raiders' offseason workout schedule is as follows:

OTA Offseason workouts: May 22-23, May 25, May 31-June 2, June 12-15

Mandatory Minicamp: June 6-8
