The NFC champion San Francisco 49ers and AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs will barge into Allegiant Stadium, home of the Las Vegas Raiders, to meet in Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday, Feb. 11.

These are two of the Silver and Black’s oldest rivals since the Chiefs and Raiders were two of the original eight teams when the American Football League was founded in 1960.

And for decades, the Oakland Raiders battled for fans and notoriety with the 49ers in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The Raiders will again be spectators, as they have been throughout the post-season, as they finished with an 8-9 record and failed to make the playoffs for the second straight season despite winning five of their last nine games under Interim Coach Antonio Pierce -- who now is their permanent head coach.

However, the Silver and Black have hopes that they will make it to the playoffs sometime soon after they upset the defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs, 20-14, at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City on Christmas Day in Week 16 this season on cornerback Jack Jones’ 33-yard interception return and defensive tackle Bilal Nichols’ eight-yard fumble return for another score.

It was only preseason and the opener, but the Raiders routed the 49ers, 34-7, at Allegiant Stadium behind rookie quarterback Aidan O’Connell, who completed 15 of 18 passes for 141 yards and a touchdown.

The 49ers rallied to defeat the Detroit Lions, 34-31, last Sunday at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., and the Raiders also played the Lions this season, losing 26-14, in Week 8 at Ford Field in Detroit, and the next day on Halloween owner Mark Davis fired Coach Josh McDaniels. He replaced him with Pierce on an interim basis.

The Chiefs might have a bit of an advantage against the 49ers at Allegiant Stadium since Kansas City has a 4-0 road record against the Raiders since they moved to Las Vegas, winning by 35-31 in 2020, 41-14 the following season, 31-13 in 2022, and 31-17 in Week 12 to avenge their loss earlier this season.

During that four-game stretch, All-Pro quarterback Patrick Mahomes of the Chiefs, who has a 10-2 record in his career against the Silver and Black, completed 114-of-155 passes for 1,154 yards and 10 touchdowns -- including five in one game.

Of course, that was against the Raiders and not the 49ers.

As for the Silver and Black, they have been to football’s ultimate game five times -- routing the Minnesota Vikings, 32-14, in Super Bowl XI at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., downing the Philadelphia Eagles, 27-10, in Super Bowl XV at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, and trouncing the Washington Redskins (now the Commanders), 38-9, in Super Bowl XVIII at Tampa Stadium in Tampa, Fla.

The Raiders also lost to the Green Bay Packers, 33-14, in Super Bowl II at the Orange Bowl in Miami and to the Tampa Buccaneers, 48-21, in Super Bowl XXXVII, at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego.

Raider Nation hopes Pierce and new General Manager Tom Telesco can return them to The Big Dance.
