Ravens Signing QB Teddy Bridgwater: A Lamar Jackson Backup Boost Idea?

Despite having Baltimore Ravens backup quarterback Tyler Huntley making a Pro Bowl appearance this past season, one NFL insider is suggesting that they sign another signal-caller.

The Baltimore Ravens won't have to worry about the future of quarterback Lamar Jackson anymore after he signed a long-term contract that will keep him with the team for another five years.

But, before Jackson signed his new deal, the Ravens placed their low restricted free agent tender on backup quarterback Tyler Huntley. Huntley played behind Jackson this past season and was even asked to fill in for him when the ex-Louisville Cardinal went down with an injury.

Huntley earned his first Pro Bowl appearance after throwing for 658 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions, with a 67 percent completion percentage. ESPN's Bill Barnwell suggests that maybe the Ravens are looking for competition.

Barnwell even named Jackson's successor at the University of Louisville, Teddy Bridgewater, as a potential signing for the Ravens.

"I thought [Teddy] Bridgewater could be the replacement for Lamar Jackson if the star quarterback held out into the regular season, but now that Jackson has come to terms on a new deal, this would be a backup role for Bridgewater on the Baltimore Ravens," ESPN writes. "Jackson isn't going anywhere anytime soon, but after seeing their league MVP miss the final five games of the regular season in 2021 and 2022, the Ravens need to boost their No. 2 role."

Barnwell is right. Injuries are a concern for the Ravens regarding Jackson, which would make sense why they'd want another insurance option. But as Barnwell writes, the two more recent stints for Bridgewater have not gone to plan.

Bridgewater's time with the Carolina Panthers as their starting quarterback in 2020 saw them finish 4-11 with under center. He threw for 3,733 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions while completing 69 percent of his throws. Combined with finishing 0-2 with the Miami Dolphins in relief of injured quarterback Tua Tagovailoa as he completed 62 percent of his passes for 683 yards, four touchdowns, and four interceptions.

Signing the veteran signal-caller could only help the Ravens as it would give Huntley someone else to learn from and provide competition to earn the right to backup Jackson, whose recent injury record is a cause for concern.
