Seahawks Move Jordyn Brooks From PUP List

Teaming back up with Bobby Wagner in the middle of the Seattle Seahawks' defense, Jordyn Brooks will be back in a helmet less than eight months after tearing his ACL.

Taking the next step in his remarkable recovery from a significant knee injury, Seattle Seahawks linebacker Jordyn Brooks passed his physical on Tuesday, paving the way for him to be activated from the PUP list.

Brooks, 25, suffered a torn ACL while trying to chase down a ball carrier in a Week 17 win over the New York Jets on New Years Day and didn't undergo surgery to repair the injury until January 19. With less than eight months until the start of training camp, few expected he would be ready to return to play by Week 1, let alone be back in time to participate in training camp.

But fast forwarding to mid-August, after being well ahead of schedule throughout his rehab process, Brooks will be sporting a helmet on the practice field on Tuesday. Even under the assumption he will slowly be eased back into team drills, his rapid return sets the stage for him to be ready to go for the season opener against the Los Angeles Rams on September 10.

Entering the final year of his rookie contract after Seattle declined his fifth-year option in May, Brooks has been one of the league's most productive tackling machines since being drafted 27th overall in the 2020 NFL Draft. Installed as a full-time starter alongside Bobby Wagner in his second season, he set a franchise record with 184 combined tackles and added 10 tackles for loss, five pass breakups, and a sack, receiving votes for the All-Pro team.

Prior to his injury on January 1, Brooks was nearly on the same pace with two games left to play, finishing with 161 combined tackles to go with five pass breakups, a forced fumble, and a sack.

Upon his return, Brooks will be re-joining a defense featuring several new faces, including the return of Wagner, who re-signed with the Seahawks after spending a year away with the Rams. With No. 54 back in the fold, the former Texas Tech standout won't have the green dot on his helmet as on-field play caller as he did a year ago when he stepped into the legend's stead, but he should play extensive snaps back with his partner in crime in the middle.

From a big picture perspective, the Seahawks won't have to rush Brooks back into the starting lineup either. Along with signing Wagner, the team also added former Steelers starter Devin Bush this offseason, providing a capable insurance policy in case the veteran needs time early in the season to fully get his feet back underneath him.

With Brooks officially activated, Seattle now has only three players remaining on the PUP list. Headlining that group, coach Pete Carroll indicated safety Jamal Adams has made great progress bouncing back from a torn quad tendon and he could be getting close to his anticipated return.

Along with Adams, defensive tackles Bryan Mone and Austin Faoliu also remain on the PUP list coming back from knee injuries. Mone tore his ACL in a Week 15 loss to the 49ers last December, while Faoliu needed a cleanup procedure shortly after signing with the team in May following a stellar season for the Seattle Sea Dragons in the XFL.
