Seahawks 'Shocker!' Will Jordyn Brooks Be Ready for Week 1?

Linebacker Jordyn Brooks has been recovering from a torn ACL since Week 17 of the 2022 season. Will he begin 2023 on the field with his Seahawks teammates?

With the NFL's initial 53-man roster deadline set to arrive on Tuesday, the Seattle Seahawks will soon be turning their attention to Week 1 and a Sept. 10 matchup with the Los Angeles Rams.

Fortunately, it appears that they will be do so with the services of inside linebacker Jordyn Brooks.

While a torn ACL may have prematurely ended his 2022 campaign, Brooks is poised to begin the upcoming season healthy, and on-time. In fact, it would come as a significant surprise to Seattle coach Pete Carroll if Brooks was not on the field when the Seahawks take on the Rams in the Emerald City.

“I’ll be shocked if he is not playing. I’ll be shocked," Carroll told reporters on Saturday. "He has been running around. He has been practicing all this week and all last week. I’ll be shocked if he isn’t ready, but if he isn’t, we aren’t going to play him. If we aren’t confident that he has been able to show everything that he can do, and he feels that as well, we aren’t going to force that at all."

Brooks returned to practice last Tuesday; his first on-field action since suffering his season-ending injury during the Seahawks' 23-6 victory over the New York Jets in Week 17. Should the Texas Tech product indeed suit up against the Rams, he would provide a significant boost for Seattle's corps of linebackers, which features Boye Mafe, Bobby Wagner and Uchenna Nwosu as the presumed starters.

Drafted by Seattle in the first round (No. 27 overall) of the 2020 NFL Draft, Brooks has finished among the NFL's leaders in tackles each of the past two seasons, compiling 345 stops over this span. He finished last season with a team-high 161 tackles, one sack, five passes defensed, and a forced fumble.

Accordingly, Carroll and the Seahawks are eager to welcome the 25-year-old back to the fold just in time to start the 2023 season. Still, Carroll reminded all interested parties that Brooks' health will be the deciding factor in his potential return to the gridiron.

"He just looks so good that I’d be surprised if he is not ready to go. We left him behind so he could have a great weekend and work and all of that so hopefully that will all add up for us.”

Kickoff between the Rams and Seahawks is set for Sunday, Sept. 10 at 1:25 p.m. PT from Lumen Field.
