Ranking Seahawks 2020 Roster: No. 10-9

With the calendar flipping to July, NFL training camps will begin around the league in a matter of weeks. To celebrate the new incoming season, we will be ranking each player on the Seahawks 90-man roster. These rankings won't simply be based on pure talent. Positional importance, salary, standing on the depth chart, and draft positioning will be among a number of factors considered as we introduce each member of the squad.
10. Jarran Reed, Defensive Tackle, #90
Height/Weight: 6-foot-3, 306 pounds
2019 Stats: 27 tackles, 2.0 sacks, and eight quarterback hits in 10 games
Standing out as one of the NFL's most improved players in 2018, Reed joined Hall of Famers John Randle and Cortez Kennedy as the third defensive tackle in Seahawks franchise history to eclipse double digit sacks and finished second behind Frank Clark with 24 quarterback hits. In addition, he set career-highs in tackles (50), tackles for loss (12), and fumble recoveries (2). But heading into the final year of his rookie deal looking to eventually cash in, the NFL slapped him with a six-game suspension last July stemming from a domestic violence incident. After returning to the starting lineup in mid-October, he struggled to shake off the rust and find a rhythm, producing just a pair of sacks and only a third of the quarterback hits he did a year prior. His struggles continued into the playoffs, as he let a couple of potential sacks slip through his grasps in a Wild Card win over the Eagles and finished with just three tackles in two postseason games.
Where He Fits Into Seahawks 2020 Plans: As noted by coach Pete Carroll at the NFL Scouting Combine, Seattle believes Reed's 2019 season defined by missed opportunities to be more of an aberration than his breakout 2018 campaign and showed confidence in him by re-signing him to a two-year, $23 million contract in March. For the Seahawks to reach their potential defensively, they desperately need him rediscover his pass rushing prowess while also returning to dominant form as a run defender in the interior.
9. Chris Carson, Running Back, #32
Height/Weight: 5-foot-11, 222 pounds
2019 Stats: 1,230 rushing yards, 37 receptions, nine total touchdowns in 15 games
Building off his first 1,000-yard performance in 2018, Carson proved to be even better last season, bulldozing through opposing defenses to finish in the top five in rushing yards for a second straight season. Though he struggled with ball security and fumbled seven times, he finished fourth among all backs in yards after contact and averaged one broken tackle per 9.9 attempts, a better mark than Titans standout Derrick Henry. He also displayed significant improvement as a receiver and was featured more in Seattle's passing game, setting a new career high with 37 receptions for 266 yards and two touchdowns while posting a catch rate above 78 percent for the third straight year. The battering ram looked well on his way to his first career Pro Bowl appearance before a cracked hip suffered against Arizona in Week 16 landed him on injured reserve and abruptly ended his season.
Where He Fits Into Seahawks 2020 Plans: Assuming he's fully recovered from his hip injury and ready to go for the start of the regular season, Carson will once again be Seattle's bell cow in the backfield, though the addition of Carlos Hyde could cut into his workload a bit during the early stages of the season to keep him fresh. As long as he can stay healthy and avoid the fumblitis that plagued him in 2019, the league's most underrated back should have an excellent chance at a third straight 1,000-yard season to position himself for a lucrative second contract in Seattle or elsewhere.
