Details Revealed on Mike Tomlin's Next Contract With Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers are handling Mike Tomlin's extension as they usually do.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are expecting to extend the contract of head coach Mike Tomlin, keeping him with the team for the foreseeable future, despite plenty of criticism throughout the season.

Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio initially reported that the Steelers were planning to extend Tomlin this offseason despite speculation they would move on, claiming the team has "no desire" to make a coaching change.

"A lot of noise on the outside. Inside, it's business as usual," Florio said on the NBC pregame show leading up to kickoff of Steelers-Bengals. "They have no desire to make a change at coach. They have no reason to believe Tomlin wants to go. They actually would like to extend his contract, which runs through 2024. They'd like to get it done before next season begins. He's already involved in roster planning from this year and the year after."

Now, he's detailed the rest of what will come - or rather will continue - when the Steelers close the deal on an extension.

During an appearance on 93.7 The Fan, Florio said the team is operating the next contract with a "business as usual" mindset. Tomlin will not relinquish any power when it comes to the NFL Draft, free agency, or his coordinator/assistant coaching hires.

According to Flore, the Steelers are "unbothered" by the team's recent struggles.

The Steelers will be in the hunt for an offensive coordinator this offseason after firing Matt Canada in the middle of the year. They'll likely consider replacing other assistant coaches this offseason as well as they look to fight their way back to the top of the AFC North.

With Tomlin most likely returning, he'll be in the forefront of those coaching hires.
