Steelers Better Hope Darnell Washington is Their Biggest Disappointment

The Pittsburgh Steelers are in great shape if this is the case.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are in for a great year if one publication's prediction is accurate.

In a list of 32 teams' biggest disappointments, Bleacher Report has named Pittsburgh's Darnell Washington. The third-round rookie is a work in progress entering his first NFL season, but despite the excitement about the Georgia tight end, things might not be thrilling in year one.

"At 6'7", 264 pounds, Washington has rare size and speed for his position. He is already a nasty blocker but he still has a lot to learn about the nuances of route running and getting open in the NFL," Bleacher Report writes.

"The Steelers don't necessarily have a reason to rush Washington's development. Pat Freiermuth combined with the wide receiver trio of Diontae Johnson, Allen Robinson II and George Pickens should allow them to bring him along at his pace.

"But those who think he's going to be an immediate contributor may be disappointed."

Here's the thing. For the Steelers, if their biggest disappointment of 2023 is a third-round rookie, who isn't going to start, then they're in good shape. With Kenny Pickett entering his first full year as a starter, Najee Harris entering year three, Calvin Austin returning from injury, George Pickens expected to be a Pro Bowler, new pieces to the defense, a rookie potentially starting at cornerback, and a brand new offensive line, a backup tight end is the least of their concerns.

But when it comes to predictions, this is a good one for the Steelers. They're honestly probably hoping Washington not catching many passes is the fans' great letdown of the season. And judging off his early role in the offense, it's not likely he's going to show much flash in the receiving game in year one.

His usage as a receiver will come with time. One day, he should be a huge part of the offense as a whole and a dynamic player for the black and gold.

Right now, though, Pittsburgh has weapons. And if they're relying on a rookie tight end to be their savior in the passing game, they're not in a great spot to begin with.
