Steelers Meet Draft's Best DL at NFL Combine

The Pittsburgh Steelers are meeting with some of the NFL Draft's best defensive linemen.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are exploring their options to add in the trenches as the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine gets underway in Indianapolis, Indiana this week.

A host of interior and edge defensive linemen told assembled reporters that they had met with the Steelers, indicating that they have some interest in adding depth to their crowded defensive line room with one of their seven draft picks this year.

Iowa's Logan Lee, an honorable mention All-Big 10 selection who racked up 18.5 sacks in four years for the Hawkeyes, was one of the first players to meet with the Steelers. He spoke to defensive line coach Karl Dunbar on his first night in Indianapolis, he told reporters the following morning.

Troy's Javon Solomon, UCLA's Gabriel Murphy and Ole Miss' Cedric Johnson - a trio of edge defenders - said they all met informally with the Steelers as well. Baylor's Gabe Hall and Clemson's Tyler Davis both had informal meetings with the Steelers too, with Davis adding that he spoke with Dunbar and that the meeting went well.

Byron Murphy, a second-team All-American for the Big XII champion Texas Longhorns, said he met formally with the Steelers. So did another Clemson Tigers defenisve tackle, Ruke Orhorhoro. He added that Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has visited Clemson multiple times, so their meeting in Indianapolis was comfortable.

And the Steelers aren't done meeting with the top defensive linemen in this draft class either. Texas A&M's McKinley Jackson had a formal meeting with the team scheduled for shortly after he spoke to assembled media.

Just how much the room the Steelers have to add more talent to their defensive line is unclear. Veteran defensive end Cameron Heyward is expected to be back in Pittsburgh for his 14th season. Standout rookie Keanu Benton figures to be a fixture of the defensive line for years to come.

They have some free agents in Montravius Adams and Armon Watts that are eligible for new contracts but the Steelers are doing their homework in case they end up with holes to fill.
