Steelers CB Slams Former OC Matt Canada
PITTSBURGH -- Matt Canada is no longer the Pittsburgh Steelers' offensive coordinator and hasn't been for some time now but he's still catching criticism from one Steelers veteran.
Cornerback Patrick Peterson, appearing on the All Things Covered Podcast with former Steelers defensive back Bryant McFadden, pulled no punches talking about the state of the offense last season. He said Canada's scheme wasn't good enough and didn't stress opposing defenses.
“Not to point the finger at the play-caller, but I don’t know what type of plays were running out there on offense when we had Matt Canada with us,” Peterson said. “I just feel like we were super stagnant. We did nothing to exploit the defense. I just feel like we were very basic and elementary.”
Peterson went on to say that he thinks quarterback Kenny Pickett deserves another chance to be the starter in 2024 after he was benched for Mason Rudolph late in the regular season and into the playoffs.
He believes that, with a new offensive coordinator installed and a new era of offensive football beginning in Pittsburgh, that Pickett deserves a chance to start over with Arthur Smith replacing Canada.
"I know this season was not what - I agree it should be a competition, I agree upon that because there's a new offensive coordinator, a new regime coming in - I get all that," Peterson said. "But if I had to hand the keys over to a guy, it would be Kenny Pickett because not only did we go out and draft this guy, we had him as our franchise quarterback, it didn't end up panning out the way that we thought it would, we find our OC, we're going to give everyone a fresh start. ... Kenny, getting a fresh start, should have an opportunity."
Peterson credited much of Pickett's struggles to Canada's "elementary" offense and thinks he could improve dramatically with new coaches in place.
