Steelers Urged to Sign 49ers QB

One former player is pushing for the Pittsburgh Steelers to sign a former top pick.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are working through their quarterback situation this offseason, and the expectation is that they will bring in another veteran to compete with Kenny Pickett.

While the team is hoping that veteran is Mason Rudolph, it's not guaranteed they will retain their end-of-the-year starter. So, they could be looking for Plan B, and former linebacker Arthur Moats has a name in mind.

Moats said on his podcast The Arthur Moats Experience, that he's pushing for the team to sign San Francisco 49ers quarterback Sam Darnold. The former New York Jets' first-round pick is on his third NFL team, but has shown starting capabilities in the right system.

"You saw Sam Darnold come in and play good this year," Moats said. "You know he’s a high pedigree guy who’s been around and has starter experience, but more importantly, he’s very talented, so less about how productive he can be. You are talking about talent in a practice setting. Do you know how hard it is to beat out a professional on that level? If you can’t beat Sam Darnold, then yeah, we need to go draft us a guy the following year because we don’t deem Sam Darnold as our franchise guy, but is he good enough to start? Sure."

Darnold played one game this season, completing 28 of 46 passes for 297 yards and two touchdowns, while throwing one interception. He's 21-35 as a starter in the NFL, throwing for 12,064 yards, 63 touchdowns and 56 interceptions. He has a career completion percentage of 59.7.

The Steelers will look through all available free agents when they try to find a competitor for Pickett. Team President Art Rooney II recently said the organization's "next step" is to find quality quarterback play, seemingly naming their biggest need this offseason as finding "their" quarterback.
