NFL Draft Watch: Steelers Appear Uninterested in Calijah Kancey

The Pittsburgh Steelers won't meet with one of the top defensive linemen in this year's draft class.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are thin along the defensive line entering this offseason and are looking to address that need somewhere in the NFL Draft. They have one of the best interior defensive linemen declared for this year's Draft right next door, but they haven't taken the time to get to know him personally during the draft process.

Pitt's Calijah Kancey has spent three years practicing and working out right next door to the Steelers at the shared practice facility on Pittsburgh's South Side. But after his final workout at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on Pitt's Pro Day, Kancey said he has not met with any of their coaches or scouts since leaving school and has no plans to meet with the Steelers before Draft Day next month.

That doesn't necessarily mean that the Steelers are all the way out on Kancey, just that they've devoted resources elsewhere during their limited time to prepare for the Draft.

They could be looking elsewhere with their picks but it's entirely possible that Steelers brass got all they needed to know about Kancey from watching him practice as a college player or conversations with his coaches, whose offices are a short walk away from their own. What's more, Kancey has been the subject of first round and even top-10 pick buzz this spring, so the Steelers could also feel he is out of the range of their 17th overall pick.
