Bryce Young to Texans? Peyton Manning NFL Draft Scouting Report - 'Sixth Sense'
Bryce Young is like Joe Burrow?
The Houston Texans - should Alabama QB Young fall into their laps in the No. 2 slot in the upcoming NFL Draft - will take it.
“I think (Drew) Brees and Russell Wilson are kind of the easy comparisons because of the size similarities,” Manning said on his show "On the Clock'' (via AL.com.) “But ... Burrow is kind of the guy that comes to mind ... Because of the sixth sense in the pocket, the decision-making, processing information quickly.''
The Bengals' Burrow is 6-4. Young is 5-10. Ohio State's CJ Stroud, who joins Young atop most draft boards, is 6-3.
Taller is better; Manning, the all-time great who just happens to be 6-5, won't deny that. But he obviously thinks it is narrow-minded to box in the smaller guys as comparable based only on their height.
Said Manning: “I’m not saying Bryce is going to have that same success as Joe right away. But I think the instincts that Joe has that Bryce had, the ability to beat the coverage keeps a lot of plays alive. … Recognition, processing, instincts, you see a little bit of Joe Burrow in Bryce Young.”
Carolina has the first pick in the NFL Draft and figures to take either Stroud or Young, with Houston likely happy to take whichever guy is still there at No. 2.
Meanwhile, new coach DeMeco Ryans is saying he won't ask the newcomer to be "a savior.'' But the NFL is a quarterback game ... which is why a luminary like Manning is motivated to analyze it all.
Maybe Manning's strongest point about Young is one that does relate to Brees.
“He’s been playing at this height for a while now,” Manning said. “You figure out. Drew Brees figured it out as well as anybody, right? You find throwing lanes. It would be different if he was 6-4 all through college and now all of the sudden he’s 5-10. He knows how to do it.”
Either the Panthers or the Texans hope Peyton Manning is right.
