'No-Brainer!' Cowboys Ex Dalton Schultz Reveals Texans Signing Thoughts

After joining the Houston Texans in free agency, Dallas Cowboys ex Dalton Schultz discusses what led him to his decision.

The Houston Texans bringing in former Dallas Cowboys tight end Dalton Schultz this offseason is arguably the most underrated move of free agency. However, it is no secret that he's going from a perennial playoff contender to a team going through a rebuild.

Some might wonder what prompted him to leave the Cowboys to make his way down to Houston. According to Schultz, the answer to that question is rather simple: DeMeco Ryans and the Texans' coaching staff.

“I came in and met DeMeco and right away, he jumps out,” Schultz said. “He’s a great guy, full of energy. ... I have a lot of respect for the schemes that they brought over. I like the coaching staff, I like the nutrition staff, the strength staff."

"Everybody I’ve met around here has been great. So that, to me, right away when I came, I was like, ‘Okay, this is a pretty cool place.’”

Of course, it doesn't hurt either that Houston's new offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik comes with Ryans from the San Francisco 49ers and brings with him a tight end-friendly offense.

Since 2020 Schultz has been one of the league's most consistent tight ends, hauling in 198 receptions for 2,000 yards and 17 touchdowns. His work earned him the Cowboys' franchise tag a year ago, at $10 million, compared to the $6.5 mil he makes now. In that sense, he could be a bargain. And pairing him with Slowik could be a great fit for Houston's offense.

Not only does he offer dominance on the field, though, but serves as another key veteran leader for a young team looking to show that they're ready to contend once again.

“They’re a young team, they’ve got a lot of good, young pieces and a lot of veteran leadership that nobody really talks about,” Schultz said. “But, you get in the locker room, and you feel it right away. So, I think it just felt very familiar, very comfortable, and I think when I came it was a no-brainer for me.”

The Texans might not win many games this season, as the rebuild likely isn't quite over just yet. Adding Schultz now, though, gives them another solid weapon to build around on offense as well as a respected veteran presence in the locker room.
