QB Davis Mills: 'Sky's The Limit' For 'Unique' Texans Offense

Starting quarterback Davis Mills is confident that "the sky's the limit" for Pep Hamilton's "unique" Houston Texans offense.

The Houston Texans' 17-0 preseason Week 3 victory versus the San Francisco 49ers was a success, but to some degree more of the same on offense - a snooze fest.

Coordinator Pep Hamilton's offense totaled just 82 yards passing, 156 yards rushing, two touchdowns, and just 17 first downs on 53 plays.

But this shouldn't come as a surprise. Head coach Lovie Smith and Co. have been saying throughout the preseason that what they're showing is little more than a vanilla version of their ultimate plans on offense.

Quarterback Davis Mills said as much himself postgame to NFL on Prime, that "[we] haven't shown a ton of what we're going to do as an offense so far this preseason."

And the second-year quarterback remains confident in Hamilton's plans for this new-look offense.

"I think the sky's the limit with what we're capable of doing on offense," Mills said. "I think it's going to be very unique to what we're going to do here compared to different teams around the league. So it's going to be really exciting pulling some of those tricks out of the bag once we get to Week 1 versus the (Indianapolis) Colts."

Exactly what these "tricks" are Mills didn't specify, but given that star wideout Brandin Cooks hasn't suited up this preseason, he may well have a big role to play in Hamilton's "unique" offense.

One player who will likely prove key to their secret plans is rookie running back Dameon Pierce

In two preseason appearances, Pierce had 11 carries for 86 yards, one touchdown, and an average of 7.8 yards per carry. His hard-nosed style and his energy were a breath of fresh air whenever he stepped on the field, but it's clear that the Texans have held him back throughout the preseason.

Again, saving Pierce is yet another sign that Hamilton is keeping his cards close to his chest when it comes to regular season schemes.

Throw in the return of starting linemen Laremy Tunsil and Justin Britt, and tight end Pharaoh Brown, and while Houston's offense may have sent many to sleep in the preseason, this could be far from the truth come Week 1.
