Texans Talking to Jadeveon Clowney About Signing; Coach DeMeco Ryans ‘Option’?

Jadeveon Clowney has an idea about coming home. And now Texans coach DeMeco Ryans is talking about it as well.

Former Houston Texans standout Jadeveon Clowney is a free agent  … and is openly talking about the idea of coming home.

And now Texans coach DeMeco Ryans is talking about as well.

Said Ryans this week at OTA’s: “We always look at any players that can help us win. We’ll explore all options. I’ll never throw anyone off the table. Everything is an option for me.”

That falls quite shy of an announcement of real movement here. But it is notable that Houston hasn’t scoffed at the idea.

And it remains notable that Clowney himself hopes there can be a reunion with the Texans following the hiring of coach Ryans.

"It would be nice," Clowney said. "They have put some pieces together. I am a big fan of their new head coach. And they have some guys up front who I think can go. It is going to be big to see what they will do this year. And I am looking forward to it."

Clowney spent the previous two seasons as a member of the Cleveland Browns. Before that, a contract dispute with the former No. 1 overall pick (by Houston in 2014) caused the Texans to trade Clowney to the Seattle Seahawks. The Texans received Jacob Martin, Barkevious Mingo, and a third-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft in exchange for Clowney.

After an unproductive season with the Seahawks, Clowney signed with the Tennessee Titans ahead of the 2020 campaign.

Clowney revealed to Fox 26 Houston that he and his agent did speak with the Texans about a potential return. In addition to Ryans, Clowney is also fond of rookie defensive end Will Anderson Jr.

“All of my family is here," Clowney said. "I have friends here. And the people who help me take care of my body. You never know what can happen."

Clowney began his career with the Texans in 2014. Houston made Clowney the No. 1 pick of the 2014 NFL Draft out of South Carolina. He played five seasons in Houston and recorded 205 tackles, 109 quarterback hits, 43.0 sacks and 13 forced fumbles.
