Texans Aren't Last In NFL Power Rankings, But Despite Offseason Moves? Houston's Close

PFF insists the Texans, as they prepare for an NFL Draft late this month that could change their fortunes, are still the 31st-ranked team in the league.

At first glance, it seems the Houston Texans used free agency wisely in plugging holes and bettering the roster.

But according to Pro Football Focus and PFF's NFL power rankings?

Not much has changed.

PFF insists the Texans, as they prepare for an NFL Draft late this month that could change their fortunes, are still the 31st-ranked team in the league.

And if we disagree with that? We'd have to take a serious look at the 31 other teams to intelligently do so, because this ranking doesn't occur in a vacuum.

What does PFF think specifically of the Houston moves? "Decent'' is their word. They write ...

"The Texans made some decent moves in free agency. They added receivers in Robert Woods, Dalton Schultz and Andrew Beck and proven running backs in Devin Singletary and Mike Boone. They also added to their offensive line by signing guard Shaq Mason. Their defense was elevated by the signing of one of the best safeties in the league in Jimmie Ward. ...

"The Texans’ defense was graded 31st in the league last season, so they need all the help they can get.''

The biggest place the Texans "need help,'' of course, is at the biggest position - quarterback.

The Mason signing, most think, adds to the Houston building blocks in an offensive line led by Laremy Tunsil and Tytus Howard, with 2022 first-round guard Kenyon Green coming up. will maintain the left side.

We think Singletary can be an electric addition to a backfield led by second-year standout running back Dameon Pierce.

And Ward is a star-quality player who comes with new coach DeMeco Ryans from the Niners, and will pair with second-year playmaking safety Jalen Pitre, who recorded five interceptions as a rookie.

Quarterback. Pass-rusher. Receiver. Fix those rooms and certainly Houston can rise from the basement in the standings and in ranking efforts like this one, which by the way has the Texans poised to not finish last in the AFC South ... because the Indianapolis Colts are tabbed to be the worst team in the league at No. 32.
