NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans' organized team activities (OTAs) started on Monday and typically you will see certain veterans skip these events as they are voluntary. However, one veteran, Derrick Henry, was in attendance from day one. That is a bit surprising considering the history, but an important thing to note for the Titans' season.

In the past, Henry is not one to be present at all of the summer workouts. In 2022, Henry did not come to some of the early phases of OTAs. In 2021, Henry even skipped mandatory mini-camp. Normally, Mike Vrabel explains this away and notes Henry's ridiculous fitness regimen as a reason for no concern, so seeing Henry in the building from the start is something we don't see often.

Henry's attendance at OTAs could be for multiple reasons. One, Henry is in a contract year, so it is more important than ever that he is ready to go for the season and could be hoping he gets an extension from the Titans. Two, the Titans are adding new elements to their offense with the promotion of Tim Kelly to offensive coordinator. However, the most impactful reason may be the changes the Titans have made this offseason.

The Titans got a new general manager after Jon Robinson was in that role for seven seasons. The Titans have made numerous changes to the coaching staff. Hiring, firing, demoting and promoting while also playing musical chairs with some roles. Those changes don't even include the natural roster turnover that happens each offseason.

This organization feels a bit different this offseason and Henry has to feel that. Certainly, all the players do. Ryan Tannehill has reportedly been in the building since February trying to set the tone. Having you veterans, especially a respected player like Henry showing this sort of dedication to the team is important.

Looking at the roster, it is fair to be skeptical of the Titans' chances to win this year. If they are to prove many people wrong and make it back to the playoffs, Henry will be at the heart of the effort. For Henry to show up early like this when he hasn't in past years will likely send a message to the locker room of seriousness.

Getting the running game going the offensive line is critical coming off the seven-game losing streak. According to the Fanduel gambling website, the Titans are heavy underdogs to win the AFC South. They are at plus-360, while the Jacksonville Jaguars are at minus-160. It's the largest gab of any of the eight divisions.

Either way, we know Mike Vrabel was very excited to see Henry out. That gives a coach plenty of ammo to use to drive other lesser players. If Henry is out here doing it, you better be. So, while it is a surprise to see Henry this early, it is also a very important step for the Titans if they want to shock the world.
