Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports reports that the New England Patriots have signed veteran tight end Visanthe Shiancoe to a one-year contract.

Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com has the specifics of the deal:

The Patriots, of course, already have two of the league's best tight ends in Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Fernandez. They also signed Daniel Fells as a free agent and claimed Jake Ballard off waivers. However, Ballard is not expected to play this season, and Gronkowski and Fells are coming off injury, so adding another veteran -- a la Alge Crumpler in 2010 -- makes some sense.

Shaincoe has never missed a game in his nine-year career, and he had 36 catches for 409 yards last season in Minnesota.
