St. Louis Cardinals' Adam Wainwright out for season with torn left Achilles
Sunday April 26th, 2015

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright is out for the season with a torn left Achilles the team announced Monday, according to the Associated Press.

Wainright will have surgery to repair the injury this week, Cardinals GM John Mozeliak told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch

The news comes after Wainwright underwent an MRI Monday. Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported Wainwright was expected to miss the remainder of the season with the Achilles injury. Wainwright had not had an MRI at the time of Rosenthal's report.

Wainwright left Saturday's game against the Brewers in Milwaukee after sustaining an injury during an at-bat in the fifth inning. The Cardinals called it a left ankle injury and said Wainwright would be reevaluated upon the team's return to St. Louis.

Wainwright faced the minimum through four innings, allowing three hits and striking out four batters.

When he came to the plate to lead off the top of the fifth, his left leg appeared to buckle as he popped out to first base on a 1–2 fastball. After Wainwright stumbled out of the batter's box, he was helped off the field by manager Mike Matheny and a trainer. Wainwright appeared to limp down the dugout stumps.

Righthander Mitch Harris replaced the Cardinals' ace on the mound the following inning, marking Harris' major-league debut and the first MLB appearance by a United States Naval Academy graduate since 1921.

In his four appearances this season, Wainwright is 2–1 with a 1.44 ERA, 18 strikeouts and three walks.

The Cardinals were leading 2–0 at the time of Wainwright's injury and won 5–3.
